As the need for skilled construction tradespeople in our region continues to grow, The Builders Guild and its member unions and contractors are actively seeking qualified minority candidates to enter our no-cost, earn while you learn apprenticeship programs.

The Guild and its members participate annually in scores of recruitment events aimed at minority, low-income, and disenfranchised residents who are seeking a family-sustaining career, one that can truly be life changing for them and their family. We work hand in hand with several programs geared to minorities that offer no-cost, pre-apprenticeship training to help people better prepare for pursuing a career in the trades.

Two of the Builders Guild endorsed programs that consistently place people in the trades are the "Intro to the Trades Program," offered at the Energy Innovation Center, and the "Breaking the Chains of Poverty Program," offered by the A. Philip Randolph Institute’s Pittsburgh Chapter.

Our region is undergoing what many consider to be a historic construction boom, with massive infrastructure projects; ongoing natural gas industry pipeline and infrastructure construction; the Shell Ethane Cracker plant, with as many as three more similar plants being considered; health care; education; mixed-use development; residential; and commercial projects.

Add to this boom the impending retirement, in the next six to nine years, of thousands of baby boom tradespeople, and the future for those entering the trades today is exceptionally bright.

Those who’ve embarked on a professional trade career have found that the trades are highly-skilled, professional careers offering family-sustaining wages above the Pennsylvania average household income, plus comprehensive health care and retirement benefits. It’s not uncommon for skilled tradespeople to earn into six figures.

All you need is the desire to learn and to build a life-changing career.

Meet just a few of the people who have found a career they love in the construction trades!
